The Travelling Man in Deep Ellum

September 5, 2009 § 2 Comments

Grabbed this shot while riding around Deep Ellum this afternoon. Awesome day out, and DART was testing the much anticipated green line just behind us.

Our friend, Brandon Oldenburg, was one of the artists who created this piece and happens to be an awesome creative head over at ReelFX. I don’t want to jump to any conclusions as to his inspiration, but we just happen to know that he’s a huge fan of the Flaming Lips, and the Travelling Man bares a striking resemblance (at least in pose) to the “pink robot” on the incredible album “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots”.

I HATE this sculpture. Seriously embarrassing. Gumby? Muffler Man? Come on Dallas! This is creating a laughing stock in the serious arts community.

Well, I guess art truly is subjective. My 6 and 8 year old love it, and its inspired my son to sculpt. Can’t say I’ve seen any of the other public works in town have done the same.
