First Buffered Bicycle Lanes in Dallas Installed at Rosemont Elementary
September 4, 2012 § 3 Comments
It’s hard to believe the day has finally come when we no longer say Dallas still doesn’t have a dedicated bike lane. A plan to include bicycle infrastructure at the lower Rosemont Elementary School campus has started bearing fruit this past week when the City of Dallas laid down buffered bicycle lanes and a new crosswalk on Mary Cliff Rd from Rainer to Taft, and bicycle sharows from Taft to Kings Highway.

New dedicated buffered bike lanes at Rosemont Elementary’s lower campus. Photo is looking north on Mary Cliff Rd at the intersection of Stephens Forest Rd in Oak Cliff
Further improvements, to be completed soon on Stephens Forest Dr., include lane re-stripping, a raised crosswalk, and more bicycle infrastructure. The project has been community lead since iBike Rosemont, a bicycle awareness program started by Christian Johnson, Jason Roberts, local parents and non-parent residents in the Spring of 2009. Here’s a great video about iBike Rosemont:
Now that new paint has been laid, work still needs to be done in educating drivers in how to travel through the new infrastructure. Look for a public awareness campaign to rev up throughout this Fall during Cyclesomatic!

Heads of the League of American Bicyclists visit Oak Cliff
January 21, 2011 § 1 Comment
(Jason Roberts, Andy Clark – president of the League of American Bicyclists, Gail Spann – LAB Texas rep, Elizabeth Kiker – vp of LAB, and Amy Cowan)
The president and vice president of the League of American Bicyclists were in town from Washington D.C. to show support for the Dallas Bike Plan and stopped by Oak Cliff the following morning to talk with BFOC about the Better Block project, bicycle advocacy in Oak Cliff and Dallas, and more. Clark discussed the ongoing efforts of the LAB and how Dallas and other southern cities can help further bicycle initiatives. The two efforts that he felt were most inspirational nationally were the growing Ciclovia movement, and the Better Block projects. After meeting, the group toured the Bishop Arts District and stopped in at the Oak Cliff Bicycle Company to meet with local shop owner Ean Parsons.
One Car No Car Series: 2011 1 day/52 week No Car Challenge
January 1, 2011 § 67 Comments
The New Year invokes change. Our calendar resets itself, we get back to the gym after a long hiatus, and we usually look for something to improve upon in the next year. Here is our challenge for you:
Go without a car one day a week for 52 weeks
Here are the rules:
- Must chose an alternative mode of transportation for errands, work, or pleasure trips for round trips from your current residence
- Walking
- Bicycle
- Public Transportation
- Other non-motorized vehicle
- Must be for at least one 24 hour consecutive period per week
- Use the Honor System!
- Submit a reply to this post once a week after your non-motorized vehicular day!
- Describe your day; the highs, the lows and whatever else you’d like to share
Here are the rewards:
- We’ll give you a one of a kind tee-shirt and possible future incentives at NYE 2011
- Satisfaction knowing that:
- “Not driving just one day a week can reduce CO2 emissions by about 8 pounds per week. That adds up to about 400 pounds of CO2 per year.” http://hernadi-key.blogspot.com/2008/11/start-saving-carbon-now.html
A pat on the back and a new perspective!
Bishop Arts gets the first car parking space converted to permanent bike parking in Dallas
December 16, 2010 § 5 Comments
The single tenet that BFOC helped promote in the recently passed Bishop Davis Land Use study was to allow businesses to supplement the zoning requirements for car parking with bike parking. Prior to the study, many of our historic structures were unleaseable by business owners due to having too few parking spaces required by code. Today, Oddfellows, the new coffee bistro in Oak Cliff, took the first initiative by replacing a car parking space in front of its building with a bench that was outfitted with wheel racks crafted by local artists and welders. The space that formerly held a single vehicle now can accommodate up to 10 bikes.
We’ll be seeing more of these installations in the coming months, so stay tuned!
