Dallas not a fan of Pedicabs
Last year, at South-by-Southwest in Austin, our main form of transportation from venue to venue was via the incredible pedicab services sprinkled all across the city. It was comfortable, leisurely, and very affordable. We were allowed to stop along the way at a small hot dog vendor, and take in the street life along our […]
Two Dallas Chambers Pass Complete Streets Initiative!
This is HUGE news! The Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (50+ business and community leaders) and the West Dallas Chamber of Commerce unanimously voted to push complete streets initiatives (Bike lanes, streetcars, pedestrian paths) for Beckley, and are asking to repeal the current Beckley/Commerce intersection. Council Members Dave Neumann, and Steve Salazaar […]
Which one would you rather ride on?
A fan of BFOC just alerted us to an Unfair Park blog article linking to the anti-bikelane Cycle Dallas video series on proper Vehicular Cycling techniques in Dallas. A woman in the comments section points out that she has no desire to take her Schwinn on Walnut Hill. That’s the reality for most cyclists. Another […]
A blast from the past
Another BFOC fan forwarded us the following excerpt from the June 12, 1988 Dallas Morning News Article titled “OPPOSITION IS SMALL BUT VOCAL” in regards to DART’s plan to develop Light Rail in Dallas: “A commuter rail system won’t work in an auto-dominated region, would carry too few passengers to justify its cost and would […]
Dallas police ticketing bicyclists without helmets
Heads up out there…we’re getting several emails about Dallas police ticketing riders for not wearing helmets. The fine is a staggering $147! Ironically, motorcyclists are allowed to ride without helmets…don’t try to find an explanation. Sadly, this is the quickest way to lower ridership in our city. A friend of BFOC spoke to us this […]
6 Year Old on Bicycle in West Dallas, Run Over by SUV
We were just forwarded the following heartbreaking story about 6 year old Juan Rey Marin, who was run over and dragged by an SUV in West Dallas. BFOC will plan a ride to honor the young boy, and to advocate for better/safer bicycle facilities in Dallas. We’ll plan on updating everyone with more details soon.
A Quick Primer on DART’s new SLRV Light Rail’s with Bike Racks
DART rolled out its newest trains a few months back, called SLRV’s. These have several enhancements including ground level entrance for better ADA compliancy, and two bike hooks per car! Right now, there’s only a handful of these cars, and you don’t see them on every grouping of trains, but the indicator to look for […]
Outside the OC: New Bikeshop near SMU/Katy Trail with Bike Rentals!
While riding down Mockingbird the other day, we ran across a new bike shop located in the old Segway store. You’ll notice from the image above that remnants of the old sign are still in place. This new shop is called Fleetwood’s Kit-Kat, and is filled with new retro styled cruisers built by Felt: They […]
Texas legislators propose transportation funding option for North Texas
The Austin Business Journal notes that State Sen. John Carona, R-Dallas, and State Rep. Vicki Truitt, R-Southlake, are co-sponsors of legislation that would allow local communities to raise taxes or fees to support urban and suburban commuter rail lines and highways. The bill they filed allows for North Texas to take greater control over its […]
Where a bike lane would have saved a life
Though we usually avoid the anti-bike lane blog, Cycle*Dallas, setup by Dallas bike coordinator PM Summer, we do find it odd that his last posting was of an accident in Portland, showing a woman hit by a right-hook incident in 2007, with the observation that the bike lane was at fault. His inference being, had […]
