A blast from the past

Another BFOC fan forwarded us the following excerpt from the June 12, 1988 Dallas Morning News Article titled “OPPOSITION IS SMALL BUT VOCAL” in regards to DART’s plan to develop Light Rail in Dallas: “A commuter rail system won’t work in an auto-dominated region, would carry too few passengers to justify its cost and would […]

A Changing Tide in City Planning – The Hope for Complete Streets

“We baby boomers are in a state of denial. We grew up with a love for the open road, big cars, and bigger houses. Our favorite shows were “Route 66”, and the book that defined many of our generation was Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road”. Density was a bad word, and public transit considered the […]

Portland’s density comparable to Dallas

Here’s another interesting find forwarded to us from a BFOC fan: Portland, Oregon Population (2008) – City 575,930 (30th) – Density 4,199.17/sq mi (1,640.30/km2) – Metro 2,159,720 Dallas, Texas Population (2008) – City 1,240,499 (9th largest)1,300,350 NCTCOG Est. 2,008 – Density 3,605.08/sq mi (1,391.9/km2) – Metro 6,145,037 (4th largest)6,538,850 NCTCOG Est. 2,008 What does this […]

A note on comments at BFOC

Due to the overuse of personal attacks, swearing, and veiled threats in recent comment threads from Vehicular Cyclists, we at BFOC will no longer post their comments. In other words, if you are adamantly opposed to bike infrastructure, this ain’t the site for you.

Complete Streets!

So why do we fight for better bike facilities, and complete streets programs? Simple…we want to return the streets to the people. An anti-bike lane commenter recently posted here stating, “Take the lane! We already have roads you can use!” What he doesn’t realize is that he’s not advocating the promotion of bicycles, but the […]

Humor: The Inefficacy of Everyday Traffic Control Systems as Represented by Cycle Dallas

In keeping with our tradition of monitoring the anti-bike lane blog, Cycle Dallas, we’ve noticed a peculiar strategy regularly invoked by its author. Simply post pictures of a mangled bicycle in a bike lane, and state with bizarre logic, “See! This proves the failure/inefficacy of bike lanes!…Once again we haven’t found the magic paint that […]

The Velorbis Scrap Deluxe

On our last BFOC group ride, we had all ranges of bicycles in the mix. From retro cruisers, to recumbants, and from high end road bikes, to entry level mountain bikes. The one that caught my eye the most was an American made version of a European styled city bike. Sure they’re heavy, slow, and […]

Copenhagen Bike Lane Concerto

Someone should inform all of these unwitting cyclists about the dangers of bike lanes. 😉

Fact Check: Population Density

We noticed on the anti-bike lane website, Cycle Dallas, authored by Dallas bike coordinator PM Summer, a continual reference to the following: “it’s important to remember that the Dallas area has the lowest population density of any statistical metropolitan area in the world.” This is a point PM has made on multiple occasions to defend […]

BFOC’s Exclusive Interview with Boston’s Bike Coordinator, Nicole Freedman

(Photograph by Yoon S. Byun) We recently profiled Boston’s new bike coordinator, Nicole Freedman, after reading the impressive Boston Globe article spotlighting the city’s recent transformation into a bike haven. As we noted in our article, Boston was the former title holder of “Worst City in the US for Bicycling”, by Bicycle Magazine. Since Dallas […]
